Photo Tips for Pet Portraits

I will need several photos to complete your pet portrait. Clear detail in the photos, especially of the pet’s face and eyes, will help me to capture your pet’s image in oil. The more photos you send, the better. Try to include several close-ups of the face and several showing the entire pet (especially for full-body paintings). Let me know which of the photos best shows your pet’s coloring. I will return your photos upon completion of the portrait.

LIGHTING:
• Try to use natural light, taking the photos outdoors, if possible.
• Avoid direct sunlight outside or using flash inside as this can distort your pet’s natural coloring. A bright and overcast day works best.

POSITIONING:
• Take the photos on your pet’s level, by sitting down on the grass or floor. Try to approach the pet when it is relaxed in a comfortable position. Don’t take photos looking down at the pet.
• Take at least two facial photos close up and in sharp focus.
• You may want someone to hold your pet still in position as long as I have other photos that show their full shape and distinctive markings.

PERSONALITY:
• Try to capture your pet’s most typical facial expression and pose.
• You may want to have pet treats or toys handy to stimulate the pet’s interest.
